Mira M. White, instructor
Mondays: January 9 – March 19, 2012 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Tuition: $ 250 (10 meetings)
Our watercolor class is structured specifically for continuing watercolorists who want to move forward in their exploration of color, composition and experimental techniques. We explore a variety of motifs and methods: some landscape, figure, floral, and abstract. This class is informal, with continual demonstration and assistance from the instructor. Students work at their own pace. The emphasis in these classes is always on building luminous layers of color, regardless of the imagery. I hope you will join us! Supply list upon registration

Mira M. White, instructor
On hiatus Monday evenings
7-10 pm Tuition: $ 250 (10 meetings)
This class is a great opportunity to experiment with and experience both traditional and innovative approaches to the use of soft pastels. While this medium promises immediate sensory pleasure with its vibrant color, it also permits tremendous freedom in mixed media applications. This approach to pastels is unusual and is built upon the premise that we will be painting ; we work with this medium both dry and wet. The class is structured to accommodate both adventurous beginners and continuing pastelists . There will be color and texture exercises, studies in monochromatic and limited palettes as well as work that utilizes the full spectrum and saturated color. All imagery, both representational and abstract is workable. Supply list upon registration

The first step in all art is learning to draw. Learning to draw with confidence is the desire of every artist. This course is designed to provide the basics of drawing and to help develop your confidence in all areas of drawing. Whether you have never drawn before, believe you can’t draw (you can!), or want to improve the drawing skills that you already have, this course is for you. We will cover all the basics: value, proportion, perspective, and composition. We will also work on line quality, expressing texture, creating space, and using design principles in our drawings. Lessons will include exposure to a variety of drawing materials and mediums. Instructor provides plenty of individualized attention and instruction.
Materials list: 18” X 24” pad of newsprint (rough, not smooth), a sketch board (large enough for your pad of paper), vine charcoal (soft), a kneaded eraser, and a chamois. A sketchbook journal for personal notes and drawings is a plus, but not a requirement.

Day Two will be a plein air painting primer and test run while indoors. We’ll pack together and work as if we are in the field: painting a still life we’ll take it slow and go through the steps together. Bring your camera (for pictures of each stage) and a notepad.
All media welcome; oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels. If you have them, bring your current travel easel(s), pochade box and tripod, paints, brushes, equipment etc. Be sure to bring some canvas boards that fit your set-up. Process of Abstraction; A Color Workshop
Mark Eanes, Instructor
Saturday January 21 and February 4, 10-4
Tuition: $190 for the two days.
There will be a minimum of 6 students, and a maximum of 8.
Elements of Abstraction and the knowledge of Color will be the focus of this two day workshop. These are the most challenging and rewarding formal elements in painting for many students. This class will be useful to those students who work representationally— the most important foundation for observational painting is the understanding of Abstraction and Color.
Day One will involve students engaging in rigorous painting exercises, including collage work, with a focus on composition, design, and devising personal strategies for understanding color. Color mixing and historical perspective will be an essential part of the work. Instructional texts will be discussed and recommended. Students will learn how to mix secondary and tertiary colors, as well as earth tones, skin tones, and a variety of grays, both warm and cool.
Students will have two weeks to continue their personal approach and investigation (i.e. Homework assignments, including a museum trip).
Day two will be devoted to work that requires more time and layers of thought and activity. As usual, there will be many examples of other artists to view and discuss, and time will be devoted to personal critique of students’ work.
Patsy Taylor, Instructor
Saturday, February 25 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM (1 hour lunch break)
Tuition: $90 for one session
Description: It is often said that you will learn more by painting one hundred paintings than by painting one. In this class we will be painting rapidly from still life, developing our brushwork skills and confidence in applying paint. We will begin by painting one canvas per hour, in the mornings and slow down to two in the afternoons. The focus will be on painting what is essential without getting wrapped up in the details. Come and “workout”! Level: Intermediate to advanced.
Materials list: your painting supplies, oil or acrylic; supports (10 canvas boards or other supports: a mix of 8 X 10”, 9 X 12”, 11 X 14”); snacks and/or lunch (lots of places to eat in studio center)

This is a unique method of working in multiple images, incorporating the immediacy of painting with printmaking methods. By repeating and reworking personal imagery and symbols, a rich rapport develops between the artist and the print. This unique workshop will focus on innovative techniques to enable printing without using a press. Class time will be spent exploring transfer, embossing, stamping, rubbing, and texture. Tesia will cover topics such as designing a strong composition, using contrast, texture and color in combination and much more. Days two and three will be spent painting from preliminary work done at Lafayette Reservoir. Additional compositional studies will be done in the studio as well.
